If the direction is set wrong (e.g. using installation direction when removing), turning the wrench will actually loosen the jaws instead of tightening them, causing it to slip and fail to clamp the filter. To set correctly: Open to max diameter, then turn counterclockwise past the center until it locks (for removal) or clockwise past the center until it locks (for installation). Once set right, it grips firmly without slipping
